Wero and raukura to start Taranaki Rā Maumahara

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Māori Ministers had a fierce welcome yesterday at the start of commemorations in Taranaki of the New Zealand Land Wars.
Hundreds of toa were on hand at Owae Marae in Waitara to challenge the crown representatives.
For the final challenge the Prime minister was offered the raukura, the white feather that signifies peace in the Taranaki tradition.
Ms Ardern says the commemoration Te Pūtake o te Riri, He Rā Maumahara highlights the importance of learning history in order to understand who we are today.
That’s why the New Zealand Wars will be part of the local curriculum in all schools and kura by 2022.
Te Pūtake o te Riri continues today and tomorrow with visits to the battle site at Waitara and wānanga.
