Rena lessons not learned

A Tauranga kaumatua says another anniversary of the sinking of the Rena in 2011 has passed with no effort having been made to ensure such a disaster can’t happen again.
Buddy Mikaere, who has connections to Ngāi Te Hapu on Mōtītī Island, says the wreck has fallen off Ohauiti-Astrolabe Reef but it is still leaking fuel into the environment, and some whānau on the island still won’t eat kaimoana from areas they believe are still polluted.
Fighting for the wreck to be removed and the clean up to be done properly has damaged relation between iwi in Tauranga Moana, and a kaitiaki reference group is still not functioning.
"Despite our best efforts nothing was changed. We still have the same rule in place we had previously. There is no change and I have grave concerns if it ever happens again we are going to be in the same position again," Mr Mikaere says.
