Civics price for Māori Party support
Māori Party president Che Wilson says teaching schoolchildren how and why to vote will be a priority if the party gets the chance to join a future government.
The party is looking for the candidates and the strategy to get back into parliament, but Mr Wilson says if it does get back, putting civics on the school curriculum will be one of its bottom lines.
He says people don’t vote when they think their vote doesn’t count, and that suits the major parties.
"The moment that you make it easier for those that would traditionally not vote, then those people are usually going to vote for minority parties. It's not going to help either National or Labour so that is why we need to be pushing this stuff, teaching it in our schools, so that people then understand they do have power and the simpler the system is to vote, the better it is for us all," Mr Wilson says.
