Māori networks to keep violence victims safer

The Family Violence Death Review Committee says mental health and addiction services should form partnerships with Māori and tauiwi family violence organizations and networks in their areas.
The independent advisory body to the Health Quality & Safety Commission says such relationships will help them address the needs of family violence victims.
In a paper published by the International Journal of Mental Health Nursing, co-author Dr Jacqueline Short says there is a strong association between family violence and mental health and addiction issues.
While mental health practitioners will often give victims advice on what they can do to be safe, they don't understand how hard it may be to follow that advice – which is where linking in the network of family violence support services can help.
It's also a way to address men's use of violence and the ongoing safety and well-being needs of victims, their families and whānau.
Between 2009 and 2015, there were 92 intimate partner violence deaths in New Zealand.
