Housing partnership effective use of Māori resources

The chair of Lower Hutt's Waiwhetu Marae, Kura Moeahu, says a partnership with Kahungunu Whānau Services is the most effective way to address housing need in the region.
The roopu has been contracted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development to deliver the Housing First Programme, which gets homeless people into accommodation and wraps services around them.
The initiative will be delivered in partnership with Te Rūnanganui o Te Atiawa and with the support of Taranaki Whānui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika.
Mr Moeahu says because mana whenua groups didn't have the infrastructure to deliver the programme at this time, it made sense to let Ngati Kahungunu take the lead.
"Yes there's an acknowledgement of who the mana whenua is of the takiwā. In terms of land, air and sea, those are mana whenua issues. In terms of social issues, housing, homelessness, etc, uplifting children, that is a social issue that we as Māori need to work collaboratively together on," he says.
Mr Moeahu says there is a lot of racism that needs to be addressed in the provision of housing.
