Wāhine Māori and Muslims united by oppression
Greens co-leader Marama Davidson is in Ōtautahi today meeting members of the Muslim community and looking for ways to amplify their voices and concerns in the wake of the Christchurch mosque terror attacks.
She was approached by the community shortly after the memorial service the week after the shootings, because of the way she framed the issues in terms of the wider experience of racism and colonial oppression.
That was helped by her work with the Human Rights Commisison before entering politics, as well as making the connection with the experience of wāhine Māori.
"Understanding in particular that Muslim women have often been impacted on by an ethnocentric lens over our cultures and traditions as women of colour and our status has been undermined by a dominant colonial culture," Ms Davidson says.
