Dump threat to Kaipara health
MIKAERA MIRU INTERVIEW CLICK HERE
A Kaipara kaitiaki is accusing an international waste disposal firm of spreading misinformation about its plans to create a giant landfill near Dome Valley.
Waste Management has won Overseas Investment Office approval to buy the land for the tip, but it has yet to apply for consents.
Mikaera Miru says a booklet put out on the project glosses over the fact the site is full of streams that feed into the Hōteo River, which empties into the Kaipara Harbour.
" There’s water in amongst all of that, that flows off those hills and they're going to put this landfill in a great big huge bowl basically. If there is going to be land erosion with all that water, it's just a matter time before that whole place slides into the Hōteo River. Its totally the wrong place to put a landfill," he says.
Mikaera Miru says government agencies are failing to protect the environment, so Te Uri o Hau is considering a rahui to block the development.
