New MTS boss Taurima ready for pace of chance
New Māori TV chief executive Shane Taurima says it's a privilege to lead the organisation at a time of huge change within the media sector.
After a full recruitment process by the Māori Television board, Mr Taurima was confirmed in yesterday in the job he has been doing in an interim basis since December.
He says in that time he has changed the newsroom and the way the service delivers its news on screen and online, and it has also boosted its internal commitment to having all staff speak te reo Māori.
He's also conscious Māori television competes not just with mainstream broadcasters but with consumer-produced content, Facebook, Netflix, Youtube and everyone else who is competing for the hearts and wallets of consumers.
"Our people are global people, they have access to content everywhere they look. They’re not just going to come to us because we are Māori or we offer reo Māori or Māori content. Of course we want that to be our point of difference but we can no longer assume that because we are the brown folk on the street if you like, that our whānau are going to come along and want to stay with us and engage in the content we are producing," Mr Taurima says.
