Digital first will be the focus of the second stage of a review of the future of Māori media.
The first report of the Māori Media Sector Shift review released yesterday identified a lack of resources holding Māori media, especially when it comes to keeping up with technology shifts.
Māori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta says Māori media are significant players in the revitalisation of te reo Māori and for providing Māori content in both English and te reo Māori for all New Zealanders.
She says iwi radio and Māori Television were set up in response to language revitalisation, but funding for their public broadcasting functions has been minimal.
The review team will now work on options for Cabinet to consider before the end of the year.
"What do we need to do to position the Māori media in a better place but also equipped for an environment that is consumer-driven, heavy focus on content, multi-platform, and requiring more sort of digital-first solutions to content creation and that opens up a number of opportunities," Ms Mahuta says.
The closure of the Waiāriki Māori journalism course means there is a training gap, especially when it comes to new media services.
