Employment Minister Willie Jackson has launched a new skills and employment initiative for urban rangatahi.
He says Pae Aronui will target urban areas of South and West Auckland, Hamilton, Porirua and the Hutt Valley as they have the highest number of Māori rangatahi who are not in employment, education or training, and with the highest projected employment growth rates.
A Waikato project, Rangatahi ki Mua, was launched in Hamilton this morning.
Mr Jackson says providers and employers will work together to help rangatahi develop the skills they need to secure ongoing employment in growth industries, such as building and construction, IT, hospitality and tourism.
"It’s a continuation of the work I've been doing over the last year supporting groups who know how to wrap around services for young Māori, know how to put pastoral care behind them, know how to support them, know how to put a future in place for young people who have never had opportunities," he says.
Mr Jackson says the Government wants to improve the profile of Māori in the labour market so they are no longer over-represented in low-skilled occupations and industries vulnerable to economic changes.
