Waikato Tainui has withdrawn from next week’s urgent Waitangi Tribunal hearing on overlapping claims to the Hauraki Deed of Settlement.
According to a joint memorandum from Waikato Tainui, Hauraki and crown lawyers, agreement has been reached between Waikato Tainui and Marutūahu on a process to sort out their differences, based on the close whakapapa connections between them.
They asked for any Waikato Tainui evidence to be removed from the record of the inquiry.
There has been a long-standing dispute over the Maramarua Forest, with Waikato Tainui negotiators insisting the iwi still had a right of first refusal over Maramarua lands despite being paid $13.6 million in 2000 in recognition of its commercial interests.
There are also concerns about representation in resource management of various wetlands and waterways.
The agreement means next week’s hearing will be confined to disputes with Ngāiterangi and Ngāti Ranginui in Tauranga Moana, Ngāti Wai and Ngāti Manuhiri regarding Aotea-Great Barrier, Ngāti Whātūa Ōrakei and Ngati Porou ki Hauraki.
