Gun ban should win Māori support
Māori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta expects Māori will support the complete ban on military style weapons.
The Government yesterday announced the end of sales of military-style semi-automatic weapons and assault rifles such as those used in the Christchurch terror attack, as well as any parts used to modify weapons for the purpose.
Ms Mahuta says many Māori own guns for hunting.
"You don’t need a semiautomatic to shoot holes through your kai so I thnik this will have less of an impact on our people than say those who are recreational gun club members," she says.
Legislation will be introduced within weeks, and cabinet will also consider tightening firearms licensing and penalties and imposing greater controls over a range of ammunition.
