Ancient forest giant gift to marae

Ngāti Rangi ki Ngāwha is now the kaitiaki of an ancient ancestor – a 50,000 year old kauri trunk unearthed from deep in ground being cleared for Top Energy's Ngāwha geothermal power station site.
Top Energy chief executive Russell Shaw says there was no doubt in his mind the 16 metre, 60 tonne log should come under the guardianship of Ngāwha Marae.
Marae chair Richard Woodman says it was a precious cultural artefact that will live on for generations, he taonga tuku iho for Ngāti Rangi ki Ngāwha.
He says the marae would talk with surrounding hapū about what should be done with it.
