Hope for action from whānau ora review

Former Whānau Ora Minister Dame Tariana Turia has endorsed the final report from the review panel into the integrated service delivery model.
The report says Whānau Ora, as delivered through a commissioning approach, has resulted in positive change, and that whānau have been instrumental in driving their own change.
Dame Tariana says 10 years ago she dreamed whānau could be enabled to be the architects of the change they saw fit, to shift from crisis to aspiration.
The report reinforces that providing support in moments that matter is making a difference, as is focusing on the strengths of whanau allows them to both build resilience and capability.
Dame Tariana says the original 2009 Whānau Ora Taskforce led by Professor Sir Mason Durie, made it clear a Māori heart was fundamental to enduring change.
Despite a strong strong recommendation then for government to commit to Whānau Ora there appears to be little take-up.
She hopes Māori don’t have to wait another decade for government to finally invest in Whānau Ora”.
