Kiwa rises out of Poverty after long wait
Land Information Minister Eugenie Sage has confirmed Poverty Bay will in future be known as Tūranganui-a-Kiwa / Poverty Bay.
In accordance with application by Gisborne District Council, the new name only applies to the bay enclosed by Young Nick’s Head (Te Kuri) and Tuaheni Point, rather than the wider landscape and region.
Ms Sage says while the restoration of the traditional name is long overdue for local iwi, there is also significant heritage value associated with the name Poverty Bay being given by Captain James Cook and recognising his first landing in New Zealand.
The NZ Geographic Board made the recommendation after receiving over 600 submissions, with a quarter wanting to retain it as Poverty Bay and a quarter preferring just Tūranganui-a-Kiwa., and a quarter backing the dual name.
