Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis has asked his department for a please explain over a claim so called Māori nationalist groups in prison could be a threat to public and community safety.

The threat list was included in a welcome by a Corrections executive to a forum in 2017.

It also listed Islamic extremism, far right activists and groups using violence to achieve political aims.

Mr Davis says the language was unnecessary and provocative.

Corrections now says it has no information to suggest there are any Māori nationalist groups operating behind bars.
