Challenges cut two ways as crown meets iwi

Tough talk today as Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and several of her ministers fronted up to the Iwi Leaders Forum in Waitangi.
Some iwi leaders still expect the close relationship they seemed to have with the previous National-Māori Party Government but Labour has made it clear it will seek multiple strands of advice from Māori.
Peeni Henare says the expectation is particularly strong with his Whānau Ora portfolio, as the iwi leaders anticipated high level access to ministers.
That’s not how the scheme evolved, and it creates challenges.
"For example if all the money for Whānau ora comes to me and I distribute it to the commissioning agencies, the question should be 'what is the relationship between the commissioning agency and the iwi in order to make sure that money goes to the places that it needs to?'" Mr Henare says.
Cabinet is still to consider the Whānau Ora review done last year, which should happen after Waitangi Day.
