Phone stunt wins reo award
Spark and Te Aka Maori Dictionary have won the supreme award at this year’s Maori Language Awards for the free ‘Kupu’ app which allows people to point their phone at an object and generate the relevant Maori word.
Maori Language Commission chief executive Ngahiwi Apanui says Spark’s achievement with Te Aka illustrates the growing interest of the corporate sector in the Maori language with several other major companies competing for awards.
A lifetime achievement award went to Professor Whatarangi Winiata of Ngati Raukawa in recognition of his role as a leader of the Generation 2000 project.
That project started in 1975 to revitalise language and culture among Ngati Raukawa, Ngati Toa and Te Atiawa.
