Teachers tackle te reo shortfall

A veteran Māori educationlist is optimistic every school in New Zealand will teach te reo within a decade.
Pem Bird says the will is increasingly there, and what will take time is building up skills among teachers.
He says an initiative to increase the capability of teachers to teach Māori history will serve as a model.
"It’s the same strategy as the teaching profession taking responsibility through its various sectors for that. In other words, if teachers want to do it, it is going to happen. It is just a matter of time," Mr Bird says.
