Strong interest from Māori in early childhood teaching
Early childhood teacher education provider Te Rito Maioha is reporting strong interest from Māori students, with Māori making up a third of its graduates.
Chief executive Kathy Wolfe says its Māori students have a qualification completion rate of 69 percent, compared with its overall 2017 rate of 72 percent and an average qualification completion rate for tertiary education organisations of 63 percent.
She says the country is short of about 1600 early childhood teachers a year, thanks to attrition and increasing demand for places in early childhood services.
Te Rito Maioha graduates about 200 teachers a year, which is least 40 percent of all new early childhood teachers.
