DAME TARIANA TURIA INTERVIEW CLICK HERE
A call for forgiveness from Dame Tariana Turia for the late Sir Ngātata Love.
Sir Ngātata died last week at the age of 81, a year after serving a prison term.
Dame Tariana says that fall from grace has overshadowed the work he did as a teacher, as a tribal leader and as an advocate for Māori self-sufficiency and economic development.
"He was basically a really great human being I believe and did some absolutely amazing things and I think that some times we forget that in the moment of when they fall by the wayside or whatever, a bit like Jami-Lee Ross, everybody is after him with a knife but in the end they will feel so much better about themselves and him if they could only forgive him," she says.
Dame Tariana says she can understand the wish of Sir Ngātata and his whānau not to have a public tangi
