Six-way split emerges as Ngāpuhi option

Ngāpuhi members are being asked to consider a proposal to split responsibility for negotiating the tribe’s historic claim settlement among six or seven teams.
Members of the technical group working on the proposal were in Whangarei yesterday and hold hui in Tāmaki Mākaurau today.
Lawyer Willie Te Aho, the advisor to negotiating body Tūhoronuku, says the aim is to evolve Tūhoronuku’s mandate in line with recommendations from the Waitangi Tribunal.
He says by splitting the settlement among regions or taiwhenua, hapū play a more prominent role.
"Basically the proposed way forward that looks at the six regions leading their own developments in terms of the negotiations process but also have a central negotiating body that looks after the commercial redress with the regions and the hapu able then to determine how that commercial redress can be allocated," Mr Te Aho says.
The hui with Te Rōpu Tūhono technical advisers will be at Te Piringatahi Marae in West Auckland at noon and the Greyhound Function Centre in Manukau at 4pm
