Hikoi takes reo to heart of city
ERU MORGAN INTERVIEW CLICK HERE
An organiser of today’s hikoi for te reo Māori in Manukau City says there has been a huge amount of interest form kura and community groups.
Eru Morgan says there will also be a range of activities, including 11 kura taking part in demonstrations of a new kaupapa maori game.
He says like the parade in Wellington Monday which attracted 7000 people and others this week in Te Raki Paewhenua and central Auckland, it’s a chance for the language to be heard outside the gates of kura and marae.
"The language is socialised and activated in various domains it is not usually heard or seen so to have it here in the Manukau business district is a huge coup for us," Mr Morgan says.
The Hikoia te Reo: Walk the talk parade will start at Manukau Institute of Technology’s business school on Davies Avenue about 11am and do a circuit of the city centre.
