An Auckland primary school is letting its pupils teach their peers te reo Māori.
It's based on the online Wai Ako or learning songs programme developed by Roimata Smail, which uses music videos to get children and teachers singing basic phrases.
Since it was launched a year ago it has been picked up by more than 2000 children inm schools around Aotearoa, and in June Ms Smail's tane Sam Boriboun tried it out in his Torbay year three classroom – with a twist.
Torbay School principal Gary O'Brien says Mr Boriboun selects children to lead the lessons.
"We give him some time to work with the children so he is able to tutor them into what they are doing but one of the beauties of the Wai Ako programme is it is so simple to implement. The children just need tutoring in how to behave in front of children, how to be clear about instructions, how to relate and make eye contact with children etc," he says.
Mr O'Brien says Wai Ako is a way to overcome some of the barriers to finding enough teaching experience and knowledge to deliver reo into schools.
