Morgan passing river baton to Pikia

Long standing Waikato River Authority Co-chair Tukoroirangi Morgan says he intends to resign from the Authority at the end of his current term in November.
Mr Morgan was closely involved in the establishment of the authority through rreaty settlement negotiations with the crown, alongside the late Raiha Lady Mahuta.
Crown co-chair John Luxton says Mr Morgan leaves an outstanding legacy, as without his efforts it is unlikely that there would have ever been a Waikato River Authority formed.
River iwi appointees to the authority have selected Te Arawa River Iwi representative Roger Pikia as the new incoming co-chair.
Mr Morgan says Mr Pikia has the skills and experience to do the job.
Mr Morgan has asked Waikato-Tainui to begin the appointment process for his board replacement in the hope that the new appointee can be welcomed at the Authority’s Annual General Meeting in November.
During Mr Morgan’s eight-year tenure as Co-chair of the Authority more than 250 restoration projects have been funded with grants totaling more than $38 million.
