Otara celebrates 30 years of talent
The Otara Music Arts Centre or OMAC is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a series of 30 specially commissioned video interviews.
Tonight’s launch of the Sustain the Wairua series will include performances by some of the performers who have come out of the centre and a special tribute to the Fuemana family.
OMAC spokesperson Gene Rivers says the story goes back even further to groups like the Grease Monkeys, who put the funk and soul into south Auckland music, and encompasses the worldwide hit How Bizzarre by Pauly Fuemana and the Otara Millionaires Club.
"It’s firmly attached with South Auckland and it's firmly attached with Pasifika and it's a big part of kiwiana now. It's entrenched and that came out of a little place called Otara and we're all extremely proud of having that connection to Phil, to Pauly and all that that did," he says.
