Pare Hauraki has welcomed the crown’s decision to sign a settlement of its historic claims.
Treaty Negotiations Minister Andrew Little said he had considered objections from neighbouring iwi and decided agreements reached in good faith should stand.
Tauranga Moana iwi Ngai Te Rangi had mounted a frenzied campaign against the small part of the settlement that covered the collective’s interest in a land block at the northern end of the Tauranga harbour around Katikati.
Hauraki negotiator Paul Majurey says the Minister has done the honorable thing in acknowledging the tribe’s long-standing interests.
Those interests had been agreed with Tauranga Moana iwi before the deed was initialled in December 2016.
"We’ve been in the area for centuries. The Waitangi Tribunal clearly confirmed our interests there. We reached agreements with them in 2012 to 2014. They wouldn’t have reached those agreements with us if they didn’t respect and acknowledge our interests there and where things reached in the end was (it was) only Ngai Te Rangi who were trying to renege on those agreements," he says.
Paul Majurey says once the deed is signed Hauraki will be ready to hold face to face talks with Tauranga Moana iwi about how it will take part in the Tauranga Moana Framework, which is the joint management agreement with local government covering the harbour and catchments.
