Te Puni Kōkiri budget cuts alarm Kōrako
National’s Māori development spokesperson says it’s time to hold the Government accountable about the diversion of funding from Māori initiatives.
Nuk Kōrako says while the $316 million for Māori initiatives is just $2 million less than National’s last Budget, by 2022 it will have fallen to $300 million a year.
There was also a $20 million under-spend by Te Puni Korkiri that wasn’t properly explained.
"It used to be the saying that what’s good for Māori is good for New Zealand. They’re starting to turn this whole thing around by saying what’s good for New Zealand is good for Māori. And we know when Māori initiatives are put back in mainstream, it doesn’t work," Mr Kōrako says.
