Suicide road trip in new film
A new feature film by psychologist and filmmaker Paora Joseph will premiere at next months’s NZ International Film Festival.
Maui’s Hook mixes documentary and drama as Joseph explores the topic of youth suicide in his third film.
He appears in the film conducting healing sessions with five grieving families touched by suicide.
In the drama section he acts as a mentor to Tama, a distressed young man spiraling into anger and despair on the anniversary of his father’s suicide.
Tama is played by Niwa Whatuira, who appeared in Dark Horse and The Rehearsal.
The film’s title refers to to the line on a map traced by the bus trip taken by Joseph and the families from Parihaka to Te Rerenga Wairua.
Festival director Bill Gosden says Maui’s Hook defies easy categorisation into the usual film genres.
