Turanga origins uncovered
University of Otago archaeologists checking part of Gisborne’s Eastland Port that is being developed as a wharfside log yard have found items that point to a settlement in the area dating back to the early 1300s.
Archaeology Professor Richard Walter says the 2.5 metre deep excavation along the edge of an old riverbed uncovered moa bones and other food items, fish hooks manufactured of moa bone and stone tools made of obsidian and chert.
Given the amount of material found at the site, the chances of finding a village within the vicinity are quite high.
He says the rare find fills in some gaps in knowledge about the early occupation of the area.
The dig site is being covered over again so any remaining artefacts are not affected by the wharf development.
