From GC to Turanga for reo revival role

Turanga FM's new manager says it's great to be back home.
Matai Smith stepped into the role after three years on Queensland's Gold Coast reporting stories for Maori Television and Native Affairs.
He takes over from Fred Maynard, who retired after heading the Turanga-based iw station since it started 25 years ago.
He says the station has played a big part in language revitalisation in Turanganui a Kiwa.
"We're hearing our announcers speaking local kiwaha, local whakatauki, local proverbs. We've got a lot of beautiful archival programming we play on air. Certainly in the developmnent of te reo Maori and playing a part towards its normalisation and revitalisation within Turanga, I would like to see that continuing to flourish," Mr Smith says.
He'd like to take the station out of the studio and have it seen more in the community.
