Practical considerations are likely to determine the speed of a shift towards more availability of te reo Maori in the education system.
There’s division within the Government about the implementing the various manifesto positions.
Maori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta says compulsory reo lessons in schools are a matter of when, not if, but New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says it’s not part of the coalition agreement.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says compulsory Maori in all schools isn’t an option for now.
"We don’t have enough teachers to ensure it's universally available. We want everyone to have the choice and availability of te reo in their schools. That’s what we are working towards now, getting the number of teachers up so that everyone has to opportunity to learn te reo. It is already embedded in our curriculum in the early years but we need to do much, much more to make sure it is actually being taught," she says.
