Reo and a slice of ika
A Christchurch takeaway is offering free te reo Maori classes with its fish and chips.
Fush owner Anton Mathews says he was brought up speaking te reo Maori, and he’s always made it a part of the business, offering bilingual menus and using te reo phrases with customers.
He wants to give the community a chance to learn, so he will offer hour-long evening classes for the next four Mondays.
The goal is to help people build enough confidence to speak and incorporate a little bit of Maori in their everyday language.
It’s important for his own tamariki the language is normalised, as he notices they stop speaking to him in Maori once they leave the house.
