New approach to marae funding

New approach to marae funding
The Government has launched a new way of supporting marae, bringing together the separate funding streams from Te Puni Kokiri and the Lottery Grants Board.
Maori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta says the new Oranga Marae approach encourages hapu to bring whanau together to prioritise their aspirations for their marae.
She says investing in marae can encourage whanau back to their turangawaewae to enable the transfer of matauranga Maori.
Oranga Marae will fund: planning, to help marae develop and document their aspirations and delivery plans;
– Technical support where specialised advice is required by a marae for capital or cultural development;
– and capital works, cultural activities and other requirements to help revitalise marae.
Internal Affairs Minister Tracey Martin says lessons learned from Oranga Marae could be applied to other lottery funding and the wider philanthropic sector.
For the remainder of 2017/18 Oranga Marae has a combined funding pool of $6.25 million to support marae.
