Supports of a controversial track up the side of Hawke's Bay's Te Mata Peak are demanding public consultation before legal status for the track is removed.
Landowner Craggy Range Winery closed the track after Ngati Kahungunu objected to its presence on a significant tribal landmark, but people continue to walk it.
George Williams from the newly-formed Te Mata Peak Peoples’ Track Society says 17,500 people have signed a petition calling for the track to stay.
