Henare close to title 100
Wool handler Joel Henare is on the verge of picking up his hundredth title.
That could come at tomorrow’s Southern Shear in Gore, the Golden Shears in Masterton in two weeks, or the New Zealand Championships in Te Kuiti in the first week of April.
Gisborne-born and raised in Central Otago, heart of merino country, Henare says he got into the industry young and learned a lot from the older workers about how to bring his mahi up to competition level.
"The late Joanne Kumeroa, the late Gina Nathan and also Tina Rimene from Masterton, and a lot of people really, picking up things from different people. Whether they have been in it for 30 years or if they have been in it 10 minutes, you are always going to learn something off somebody," he says.
Joel Henare still loves the shearing sheds, but these days he makes his living filleting fish for Talley’s in Motueka, so he can provide a stable home for his growing family.
