Tuhoronuku confident Little on right track

The chair of Ngapuhi’s mandated claim negotiating body believes yesterday’s meetings with Treaty Negotiations Minister Andrew Little will lead to a fresh start for talks.
Mr Little, who is in the north for tomorrow’s Treaty of Waiting commemoration, met separately with Tuhoronuku and its Te Kotahitanga opponents.
Hone Sadler says the minister has listened to all sides and indicated he will put a proposal to them next month.
He says Mr Little clearly wants to prevent any progress towards settlement becoming bogged down in legal action, and he also wants to avoid relitigating Tuhoronuku’s mandate.
There was also no appetite for doing multiple settlements, as was suggested by former prime minister Bill English at the weekend.
It’s expected Mr Little will attempt to bring together the leaders of the rival groups so they can sort out their differences.
Mr Sadler says there is no appetite for doing the same old thing and flexibility is expected, such as incorporating Te Kotahitanga within Tuhoronuku’s mandate.
The full board of Tuhoronuku is set to meet on February 16 to discuss this next steps.
