Mayor keen on Maori mentoring
Wellington wants to double its involvement in a national Maori mentoring programme.
Mayor Justin Lester says this year it intends to mentor two rangatahi on the Tuia programme.
The Local Government New Zealand's Mayors' Taskforce for Jobs initiative aims to develop the leadership capacity of young Maori by pairing them with mayors and/or deputy mayors, who mentor them on a one-on-one basis.
Each Tuia rangatahi will be mentored for 12 months, attend five wananga around the country and undertake a 100-hour community services project.
Applications close on Friday for rangatahi aged from 18 to 25 who are already contributing to the wellbeing of their community.
