Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says the Labour New Zealand First coalition wants to make genuine jobs, not make-work schemes.
Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones has come under fire this week for his plan to get young people and the long term unemployed into work, which has been characterised as work for the dole.
Ms Ardern says what the coalition is proposing is not what National did in the 1990s, when people were made to work without being paid a proper wage.
"None of us want that because we want to create genuine jobs and genuine employment opportunties but we are going to focus on those being directed on people who might be on an unemployment benefit. A great example is forestry. We've got big goals around planting a billion trees over 10 years. We are going to need a big workforce for that but there are lots of training opportunities in doing that, so these are not make-work schemes, these are genuine jobs," she says.
