Waitakere open despite rahui

Auckland Council has refused to fully back a rahui imposed on the Waitakere ranges by mana whenua iwi Te Kawerau a Maki.
Instead of a complete ban councillors voted yesterday to close several high and medium-risk tracks in a bid to stop the spread of kauri die back disease, which is already threatening more than half the region’s kauri trees.
Councillor Penny Hulse says people will be encouraged to give the ranges a break and find somewhere else to walk this summer.
Those who do go should stay on the tracks, read the signs, stay away from the closed tracks and clean your shoes and boots if you go in.
