Electric fence mogul comments ‘outdated privileged and sad’ says Waikato Tainui leader
The latest high profile critic of the Treaty of Waitangi has been set some homework by Waikato Tainui.
Electric fence mogul Sir William Galllagher told an Institute of Directors function in Hamilton on Friday the treaty was a fraud, citing fringe theories put up by the Hobson's Choice campaign and writer Hugh Barr.
Waikato Tainui chair Parekawhia McLean says Sir William's views are outdated, privileged and sad.
He has a partial view of history.
"He should also take a look at the many publications from the late Michael King, Vincent O'Malley's book The Waikato Wars that was released last year, Dame Anne Salmond. If he is still on the conservative side there are Michael Basset's books and writings, so there is a diverse range of views," Mr McLean says.
She says Sir William Gallagher's views don't reflect a progressive modern nation that embraces Maori heritage and is also inclusive of other cultures and diversity.
