The Maori law society is trying to encourage more Maori lawyers to practice in areas of immediate concern to whanau Maori rather than slot into the commercial track.
Te Hunga Roia Maori o Aotearoa started its three-day annual conference in South Auckland today.
Co-chair Ophir Cassidy says more than 250 lawyers and law students have registered, and there is always a good turn out of Maori judges as well to speak and attend sessions.
The hui is broken into separate streams covering different areas of law, but Ms Cassidy says many young lawyers go into commercial or treaty law rather than family, youth and criminal law.
"A lot of our people are in these courts and it is important to have our people appearing for them, advocating for them," she says.
