Taniwha St tenant challenges crown strategy

Green MP Marama Davidson says a pensioner fighting to stay in her Glen Innes home is a symbol of what’s gone wrong with the National-led Government.

Niki Rauti has been fighting a 90-day eviction notice for almost a year.

Her Taniwha St home is one of 2800 state houses slated for demolition and replacement by the Tamaki Regeneration Company, which is jointly owned by the government and Auckland Council.

Ms Davidson took time off from campaigning for Tamaki Makaurau yesterday to attend Ms Rauti’s High Court appeal, says the crown will have spent more money trying to get her out that if they had left her in peace.

"I support the stand she is making because she is standing storng agaisnt the crown moves to privatise state housing and the crown neglecting its responsibility to ensure that homes are a human right," she says.

The decision on the appeal should be out next week.
