Settlement rush alarms Ngati Whatua

Ngati Whatua Orakei Trust is crying foul over another round of signings that bring Hauraki claims nearer to completion.
Ngati Maru, Ngati Tamatera and Ngati Patukirikiri initialed deeds of settlement last Friday, meaning they can now go out to be ratified by tribal members.
Ngati Whatua Orakei spokesperson Ngarimu Blair says the signings, just two weeks out from the election, display a new level of political arrogance by Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson.
He expects deeds of settlement with Marutuahu and the Hauraki Collective will also be initialed before September 23.
Ngarimu Blair says the Minister knows the settlements include matters currently before the courts and the Waitangi Tribunal, such as the transfer of properties that Ngati Whatua says is within its rohe.
