San Francisco show for Lindauer portraits

Americans will get the chance to see some of the finest Maori portraits at an exhibition opening in San Francisco.
The Maori Portraits: Gottfried Lindauer’s New Zealand, includes 31 portraits from Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki and Auckland War Memorial Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira.
Max Hollein, the director of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, says the exhibition not only presents Lindauer’s astonishing work but also addresses the complexities of what a painting is and can be.
He says it’s fascinating a Czech painter, trained in the European style of 19th-century portraiture, became the most celebrated portraitist of Maori.
The exhibition in de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park will be supported by public floor talks from several descendants of Maori whose portraits are on the walls.
The paintings will be on show until April 1 next year.
