Should Police issue protection orders?

The Family and Violence Legislation Bill introduced by the National government last year has just completed the select committee stage in parliament.
The Bill aims to break the pattern of family violence and reduce the harm and cost suffered by victims of domestic violence.
Manurewa MP, Louisa Wall works closely with Manukau police and says there's a strong case for police to issue protection orders under current legislation that's not an option for them.
"I do think that the Police sometimes are in a good position to understand the nature and severity of the violence and whether they should be empowered to make that application on behalf of the victims."
Manurewa Labour MP Louisa Wall says the Bill is set down for its second reading and it's likely to pass before the houses rises at the end of August.
