Ngai Tahu shows off artists on web

Eight Ngai Tahu artists are to be profiled in a series of mini documentaries made for the internet.
Nga Ringa Toi o Tahu follows on from the award-winning Mahinga Kai web series, which looked at the tribe’s traditional food gathering practices.
Executive producer and Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu chief operating officer Julian Wilcox says the series provides glimpses into the lives and careers of some of New Zealand’s most celebrated contemporary art practitioners who also happen to be Ngai Tahu
The first episode features Dunedin artist Simon Kaan, whose animated vistas bring together his Ngai Tahu and Chinese father, his love of surfing and the southern landscape.
Other artists in the series include master carver Fayne Robinson, jeweller Areta Wilkinson, sculptor Ross Hemera, multi-media artist Lonnie Hutchinson, photographer Fiona Pardington, video installation artist Nathan Pohio and weavers Reihana Parata and Morehu Flutey-Henare.
The series is funded by Te Mangai Paho and can be viewed from July 1 at www.ngaitahu.iwi.nz/toi
