Papa clear for Maori Party run

Waikato Tainui executive chair Rahui Papa has stood down to campaign full time for the Maori Party in Hauraki-Waikato.
Mr Papa launched his campaign yesterday at Pohara Marae south of Cambridge, which he has represented in the tribal parliament since 1999.
His deputy Rukumoana Schaafhausen is the new chair of Te Arataura.
Mr Papa says Ms Schaafhausen, from Rukumoana Marae near Morrinsville, has served on tribal governance bodies for nearly two decades, and combines a legal mind with an iwi heart.
He says highlights of his four years leading the tribe include the return of Rangiriri Pa, petitioning for a land wars commemoration day and driving the iwi’s education plan, including establishing more than 20 kawenata or covenants to support Maori students within schools in the Waikato rohe.
The Maori Party will launch its Te Tai Tonga candidate, Mei Taare, on June 27.
