Budget boost for marae
A boost for marae restoration in this year’s Budget.
Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell says he has secured $10 million over four years allocated to help repair and restore whare and revitalise the paepae.
The Marae Ora – Sustaining the Marae, Sustaining the Pae fund is part of a $27 million package that will also help more whanau live in safe, secure and healthy homes.
He says marae need to be safe, secure and healthy to support the wellbeing of whanau, hapu, iwi and communities, marae must be safe, secure and healthy.
The fund will support the restoration of whare, repair facilities, insulate meeting houses and provide for reo and tikanga wananga.
Another $8 million is going to the Kainga Ora Maori Housing Network, which over the past two years has supported 140 housing proposals worth $37.5 million.
The rest of the new money, $9 million, goes to Te Ara Mauwhare or Pathways to Home-Ownership, a three year trial of innovative new approaches helping whanau achieve more housing independence, such as shared equity, rent-to-buy arrangements or other community-led proposals.
