Mauao councillor ready to tackle mahi

Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s newest member says Maori land development and ensuring iwi and hapu in the area get their fair allocation of fresh water will be major objectives in her first term
Matemaona McDonald was last month elected to the Mauao Maori constituency in a by-election to replace the late Awanuiarangi Black.
She campaigned a list of objectives, including encouraging rangatahi participation, tackling pollution, water allocation, and addressing barriers to the utilisation of Maori land.
Being at the governance table will be a change, after more than two decades working inside the council and sometimes being reprimanded for her advocacy.
